James 1:1-18
Trials and Temptations
(Memory Verse: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds. James 1:2)

Study 1 of 9

Time To Focus

What are Trials?

What are some examples of trials that we face?

Time to Study
Read James 1:1-8:
When you face trials, what should your attitude be (vs. 2)?

What is your reward for overcoming trials? (vs. 3-4)

When you face trials, who should you turn to for help (vs. 5)?

What does it mean to it mean to be a “double minded man?”

Read James 1: 9-18

The Bible gives a very clear message about trials and temptations. Temptations...
Starts in your mind as evil desire that grows to lust and enticement (vs. 13-15)
Gives birth to Sin and continues to grow (vs. 15)
Sin leads to death (vs. 16)

Notice that it all starts in the mind.w Temptation is mental warfare from by Satan.

Time to Do
What is the right way to avoid falling to temptation?
1. Ask God for wisdom (vs. 5)
2. Don’t be “double minded.” Stay away from sin. Don’t “flirt” with it (vs. 6-8, 13-14)
3. If you get caught, get out of the setting and focus on God.
4. Thank God for loving you.

What changes do you need to make in this area?

Neat stuff about James to dazzle your friends with.
The James who wrote this book was probably the human half-brother of Jesus. He was born to Mary after Jesus, and was an early leader of the church in Jerusalem. (See Luke 24:10, Acts 1:13-14, Gal. 1:19)
This is deep stuff. Even though Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus, she then had children with Joseph in the normal way.
